Hamilton has two reasons to be called City of Steel: Stelco and Dofasco. At times, Stelco has a strangle-hold of stability and sucess and other times, such as now, Dofasco carries that claim on its shoulders. Hamilton is also called the armpit of Southern Ontario for the very same reason. When crossing the skyway bridge from Burlington to Hamilton at night, some have suggested it looks like Melkor's work of creating Orks in Middle Earth. Someone has told me that it actually puts an image in their heads of hell.
And yet, as Hamilton's largest employer, Dofasco is also seen as Hamilton's sweetheart. Within the last week, there was an overseas bidding war for Dofasco which was driven up to $3.75 Billion or $72.20 per share. Although this offer fell through, the owners, the workers and the rest of Hamilton stand confident in their Darling Dofasco. To celebrate, their slogan is quoted: "Steel is our Product, People are our Strength, Hamilton is our Home."
