Salt seems to be the answer for everything around here. Freezing rain? Try Salt. Minus 5? Use Salt! Minus 10? Salt! Salt! Salt! It really is quite unbelievable to me how often salt is used around here. Even with no snow on the ground, trucks (the ones with plows mounted on the front) spit salt out which produce the sound of rolling dice along the side of our car. People have the form down too. One can see there is a real art in covering a driveway in salt. With the flick of the wrist, the overly cautious homeowners send the salt flying with about as much precision as the sower in Jesus’ parable—on the hard ground, on the fertile ground and everywhere in between. There is such an abundance of salt around here that Julia was told that we should wash our car weekly! Although I can see the merit of using salt sometimes, right now it just seems a little too much.
